Chicago to Kaneohe, Under the Koolau Cliffs

Kaneohe sits on Oahu's windward side between the steep Koolau cliffs and Kaneohe Bay, and Chicago to Kaneohe movers have to bring your container over those cliffs to reach it. The 2020 census counted 37,430 people, and the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 survey has about three in four Kaneohe homes owner-occupied.

That's up from 34,597 in 2010. LD's Google profile lists Hawaii by name, and one coordinator stays on your file from the Chicagoland walkthrough to delivery.

Why Kaneohe Gets a Rain Plan

Kaneohe is much wetter than leeward Honolulu, where your container comes ashore. NOAA's normals give the Kaneohe station measurable rain on about 238 days a year, against 89 at Honolulu's airport. Plan the unload as if it will rain.

That's why shrink wrap goes over the blankets on everything upholstered. Our profile lists it as standard: blanket wrap, shrink wrap and tie-downs before the doors close.

Tips for Moving From Chicago to Kaneohe

  1. Orders for Marine Corps Base Hawaii? Get your transportation office's answer on a personally procured move before the walkthrough, not after.
  2. Pets land at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Direct release there needs no extra permit.
  3. Register the car on Oahu or get the $5 permit within 30 days of its arrival.
  4. Insure the car in Hawaii before you book the safety inspection. No Hawaii insurance card, no pass, per the manual.
  5. The permit itself takes the registration certificate, the shipping receipt and a current Hawaii safety inspection, per Hawaii's driver manual, and lasts 12 months at most.
  6. Your Illinois license is fine to drive on. Hawaii's driver manual exempts holders of a valid license from any U.S. state.
  7. Put mattresses in bags and books in plastic inside their boxes.
  8. Windward yards grow everything, and the import list still applies. Palms, orchids and bamboo need permits arranged before they ship.

Delivery Day in Kaneohe

Before the tunnel comes the yard. Sand Island opens 6 to 3:45 Monday to Thursday and 7 to 3:45 Friday, and stays shut on Saturday, so the trucker's pickup is a weekday job.

Our route check runs the Likelike from the yard, through the Wilson Tunnel, about 12 road miles to town. H-3 and the Pali are the other two crossings.

Townhome lots and apartment complexes set their own loading rules. Bring them to the walkthrough so the trucker knows before the gate.

Packing for Windward Rain

Matson's container walls are corrugated, and Matson sends no blankets or ropes, so whoever loads one brings the padding. We blanket wrap and shrink wrap every piece in Chicagoland, before it leaves your home.

Kitchens go in dish packs, and art gets a wooden crate built to the piece.

Base housing not ready when the container lands? Storage in transit holds the shipment in a secured vault, billed by the month, until you call for it.

Moving with kids? Hawaii public schools assign by home address and ask for proof of residency to enroll, such as a lease, a utility bill or another official document.
