Chicago to Kailua Movers for Windward Oahu
Chicago to Kailua movers: LD Movers plans the Honolulu port, the run over the Koolau range and your lease date, with one coordinator to your door.
Chicago area to Kailua
Chicago to Kailua, Over the Pali
If you searched for Chicago to Kailua movers, this is Kailua on Oahu, not Kailua-Kona. It sits on the windward coast, across the Koolau range from Honolulu. It's a town of owners: the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 survey counts 72% of Kailua homes as owner-occupied, and 40,514 people lived there at the 2020 census.
Kawainui Marsh sits at the edge of town. At about 830 acres it's the biggest wetland the state has left, per Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources. There's no Kailua port, though. Your container lands in Honolulu and comes over the Koolau range by highway. LD's Google profile lists Hawaii, and one coordinator runs the file from Chicagoland to Kailua.
Route facts
Chicago to Kailua by the Numbers
Distance: not drivable. About 4,239 miles in a straight line.
Road leg: about 2,018 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, or about 2,084 to Tacoma, before the ship.
Port: Honolulu. Kailua has none.
Port to town: about 15 road miles from Matson's Sand Island yard over the Pali Highway, Route 61, on an OSRM route we ran in October 2026.
Chicagoland pickup
Chicagoland Pickup for a Kailua Move
Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove and Chicago are the pickup towns on our profile. The coordinating office is 520 S Hicks Rd, Palatine.
Book the walkthrough at home or on video. The inventory sets the binding estimate and shows whether a full container makes sense. It matters here because Matson only ships full container loads and refers anything smaller to freight forwarders or moving and storage companies.

Why LD Movers
Why a Kailua Move Hinges on the Lease
Your flight lands days or weeks before your furniture does. The house has to exist on paper before either one matters.
Kids are why. Hawaii public schools assign by home address, and enrolling takes proof of residency: a utility bill, a lease agreement or another official document showing where you live. Without a Kailua address on paper, there's no Kailua school assignment, which makes the lease date your family's real start date.
Planning a furnished stay for the gap? Check it first. Honolulu's Ordinance 22-7, signed April 26, 2022, allows short-term rentals in the Resort District and in apartment-zoned areas mapped in the ordinance, and hosts have registered with the city since October 2022. Ask yours for the registration.
So we say it early: sign the lease before the container sails. If the dates still don't line up, storage in transit holds everything, billed monthly, with every piece inventoried and labelled. It comes out on the same list it went in on.
Before you book
Tips for Moving From Chicago to Kailua
- Search listings for Kailua, Oahu, 96734. Kailua-Kona is a different town on a different island.
- A qualifying pet flies into Honolulu for direct release, then rides over the Pali with you.
- Thirty days after the car lands, it needs Oahu registration or the $5 out-of-state permit, and the permit needs a safety inspection.
- For the permit, bring the registration certificate, the shipping receipt and a current Hawaii safety inspection. Hawaii's driver manual caps an out-of-state permit at 12 months.
- Line up Hawaii car insurance before the inspection. Per the driver manual, a Hawaii insurance card is what gets the car through it.
- Bamboo and palms count as restricted plants. Leave them in Illinois unless the permit's done.
- Cars ship on their own, emptied of personal items. Matson has suspended EVs and plug-in hybrids, so check the carrier first if yours plugs in.
- Central Pacific hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. A summer or fall sailing is when storage in transit earns a line in the plan.

Kailua adds the trucker's run from Sand Island over the mountains, plus storage if the lease starts late. Ask your home insurer whether it covers a mainland to Hawaii move. If it doesn't and the container sails with Matson, Matson sells Ad Valorem cover at 2% of declared value.
One more line to ask about: if the container comes through Long Beach, the port's Clean Truck Fee rides on the trucker's bill, not Matson's.

Delivery Day in Kailua
Three highways cross the Koolau range: the Pali, the Likelike and H-3. The Pali is the direct one into Kailua, about 15 road miles from Sand Island on our route check.
Commuting back over? Census doesn't measure Kailua to Honolulu, but it does measure how long Kailua's workers take to get to work: 29.1 minutes on average for 2020-2024, against 33.1 in Chicago.
Tell your coordinator about the driveway, the street and any HOA rules at the walkthrough, and the trucker gets them in advance.
Ask for a weekday pickup at Sand Island. The yard closes on Saturdays and at 11:45 a.m. on Sundays, and the free days keep counting through both.
Packing
Packing for Kailua
Matson's containers have corrugated walls and come with no blankets, so whoever loads one brings the padding. Our crews blanket wrap and shrink wrap every piece in Chicagoland, before it leaves your home.
The windward side is the wet side. NOAA's nearest windward station with 1991 to 2020 normals, in Kaneohe, logs about 51 inches a year against 16 at Honolulu's airport. Shrink wrap the sofa.
Bringing house plants? HDOA clears most plants after inspection if they land free of soil and pests. Bamboo and palms are the ones on the restricted list.
Choosing a mover
Questions for Any Chicago to Kailua Mover
Chicago to Kailua movers who can't answer these haven't planned the windward side.

- Who books the ship, and under whose name?
- What's your USDOT number, and is the estimate binding?
Kailua Living Costs, Oahu Numbers
Kailua is in the City and County of Honolulu, so MIT's Honolulu County figures apply. One adult needs $64,134 a year before tax, against $52,909 in Cook County, and two working parents with two kids need $160,542. Oahu's 0.5% excise surcharge applies on this side of the Pali too.
Kailua itself runs well above the county. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 survey puts Kailua's median gross rent at $3,093, against $1,823 in Urban Honolulu and $1,440 in Chicago, and its median home value at $1,353,700.
Set that against MIT's housing budget for one adult in Honolulu County, $22,640 a year or about $1,887 a month. Kailua's median rent runs about $1,200 a month past it. Budget for the town, not the county.
Power bills and Hawaii's income tax next to Illinois' are on our Honolulu page, so this one doesn't repeat the table.
