Movers to Hawaii from Chicago and Illinois

LD Movers are movers to Hawaii from Illinois: Chicagoland pickup, one coordinator, and Hawaii's plant and pet rules planned before the ship sails.

5-star on Google

Moving From Illinois to Hawaii Starts With What Can't Ship

LD Movers takes a Chicagoland household to Hawaii in three legs: a truck to a West Coast port, a container ship across the Pacific, then a trucker on the island. One coordinator holds the file across all three. There's no road to Honolulu, so all movers to Hawaii work some version of that chain. LD's own site puts it plainly: Hawaii moves by container or barge.

Our Google profile lists interstate moving to every state, Alaska and Hawaii included. This page starts where your move starts, in Illinois, and follows it to the island door.

Our advice runs against most checklists. Sort the plants and the pets first. Hawaii's Department of Agriculture inspects plants on arrival and can hold a dog or cat that misses a step for up to 120 days. The couch has no paperwork.

Illinois to Hawaii: Road, Ocean, Island

Road leg: About 2,000 to 2,100 road miles from Chicago before the ship. Our route data puts Tacoma at 2,084 miles and Los Angeles, next door to the Port of Long Beach, at 2,018.

Ocean leg: Matson lists 5 to 7 days from the West Coast to Hawaii.

Island leg: A UIIA-registered trucker pulls the container from the harbor to your address. Matson doesn't deliver.

Cost drivers: Weight and distance, plus packing, crates, port trucking and storage in transit.

Delivery window: Written into your file after the walkthrough.

Which Hawaii Port Your Address Uses

Matson's Hawaii ports are Honolulu, Hilo, Kawaihae, Kahului and Nawiliwili. On the Big Island, Hilo serves the east side and Kawaihae the west. Kahului is on Maui, Nawiliwili on Kauai.

Matson's transit table adds that times vary with connecting barge schedules. Ask which harbor your container lands at before you compare two delivery dates.

We keep route pages for Honolulu, Hilo, Kailua and Kaneohe. Kailua and Kaneohe sit on Oahu's windward side, so their containers come ashore in Honolulu and cross the Koolau range by highway.

Pickup in Chicagoland

Our profile names Arlington Heights, Chicago and Buffalo Grove for interstate pickups. The office is at 520 S Hicks Rd in Palatine, open Monday to Friday, 8 to 5.

The walkthrough happens in your home or by video. It sets the binding estimate, and it tells you early whether your things fill a container.

What LD Handles on a Hawaii Move

  • A walkthrough in person or by video, then a binding estimate in writing
  • One coordinator on your file from inventory to delivery, never handed to a broker mid route
  • Blanket wrap, shrink wrap and tie-downs before the doors close
  • Packing and custom wooden crates for art, glass tops and marble
  • Released value protection at no charge, and full value protection on request
  • Storage in transit, billed monthly, if a closing date slips
  • Your car arranged on the same file as the furniture

Why One Coordinator Matters More Over Water

A Hawaii shipment changes hands at least three times: the truck to the port, the ship, the trucker on the island. Matson won't let anyone load or unload at its terminal, and it doesn't deliver on the islands. Somebody has to line up every handoff.

On our files that's the coordinator. One person holds your file from the inventory in Illinois to delivery on the island, and it never goes to a broker mid route.

Before You Book an Illinois to Hawaii Move

  1. Check every houseplant against the HDOA restricted list. Palms, orchids, bromeliads, pine and the grass family, bamboo included, need permits or treatment arranged first.
  2. Start the pet file early. The rabies blood test is followed by a 30-day wait, and papers are due at least 10 days before the flight.
  3. Clean soil off pots, bikes and garden tools. Plant material has to arrive free of soil and pests.
  4. Driving an EV? Matson has suspended electric and plug-in hybrid cars on its ships. Pasha gives them special handling.
  5. Landing on Oahu with a car? Honolulu wants an out-of-state permit or Hawaii registration within 30 days of arrival, after a safety inspection, plus the bill of lading showing the VIN.
  6. Keep medication, documents and keys in your luggage.

How Much It Costs to Move to Hawaii From Illinois

No number on this page. A Hawaii price given over the phone is a guess. Federal rules tell an interstate mover to survey your goods, in person or by video, and base the written estimate on it unless you waive that in writing before loading. Our binding estimate is priced on weight and distance off that walkthrough.

Selling the sofa and buying on the island? Your call. Make it before the walkthrough, though. Federal rules tie a binding estimate to the quantities and services written on it.

Quotes on this route come per pound, per container or per crate. Ours is weight and distance on the household move, and Matson ships full container loads only. Ask every mover which legs its number covers.

An Illinois to Hawaii Timeline, Built Backward

Work back from the day your flight lands.

Eight weeks out

Book the walkthrough. Pull the pet's two latest rabies certificates and book the blood test.

Six weeks out

Sort plants against the HDOA list. Give away what can't go.

Four weeks out

Book the car's sailing and copy the registration. Pasha asks for it at the port. Keep the car's bill of lading too. Honolulu asks for it at registration.

Two weeks out

Pet papers in Hawaii no later than 10 days before arrival.

Move week

Pack, wrap, load. Your luggage carries what you need until the container lands.

What Delivery Looks Like in Hawaii

If your container sails with Matson, it can't be emptied at the terminal. A trucker registered with UIIA pulls it to the address, and Matson gives household containers 10 calendar days to be picked up and returned empty.

Past that, storage or detention charges start. That's why we want your keys, parking and building rules sorted before the ship sails.

Packing for a Truck, a Ship and a Truck

Matson's household containers have corrugated walls, and Matson supplies no blankets, ropes or tie-downs. Whoever loads one brings the padding. Our crews blanket wrap and shrink wrap every piece in Illinois, before it leaves your home.

Kitchens go in dish packs. Art, glass tops and marble get a wooden crate built to the piece.

How to Check a Mover Before a Hawaii Move

Seven questions sort out any Illinois to Hawaii moving company fast, us included. The plant, pet, carrier and federal rules here were checked against HDOA, Matson and federal regulations in October 2026.

  • Is your USDOT number active? Ours is.
  • Carrier or broker? A broker has to say so in its ads and list the carriers it uses, with their USDOT and MC numbers.
  • Did anyone see my things? An estimate without a survey, in person or by video, misses the federal rule unless I waived it in writing.
  • Who packs and loads the container? Matson says that's you or a moving company.
  • Who trucks it on the island? Matson doesn't.
  • Is the estimate binding and based on an inventory?
  • What happens to my plants and pets? A mover who shrugs hasn't read the HDOA rules.

Full Service or a Self-Pack Container?

Two ways get a houseful onto a Hawaii-bound ship. A mover packs, loads and runs the handoffs, or you rent a container and fill it yourself.

Matson says its containers get loaded by you or a moving company. It brings no blankets, ropes or tie-downs, and nothing is loaded or unloaded at its terminal. Self-pack, and the padding and a UIIA-registered trucker at each end are yours to find.

The bigger gap shows when something arrives broken. Cartons our crew packs carry damage coverage that owner-packed boxes don't. Released value protection is free on our interstate moves, with full value protection on request. Get our walkthrough price and hold any container quote next to it.

Hawaii Prices Next to Illinois

Can you live in Hawaii on $3,000 a month? Not alone on Oahu, by MIT's numbers. Its Living Wage Calculator, updated February 2026, puts one adult in Honolulu County at $64,134 a year before tax, about $5,345 a month. $10,000 a month clears that, and still falls short of the $160,542 MIT gives two working parents with two kids. The Bureau of Economic Analysis put Hawaii's 2024 price level at 110.0 against a national 100, second only to California, with Illinois at 100.0. BEA names housing rents as the usual main driver of gaps like that. The side by side with Cook County is on our Honolulu page.

Illinois to Hawaii Moving FAQ

Can LD Movers move me from Illinois to Hawaii?

Yes. Our Google profile lists interstate moving to every state, Alaska and Hawaii included. Call (800) 969-8006 to book a walkthrough.

How much does it cost to move from Illinois to Hawaii?

We don't publish one. No average knows your weight, or the 2,000-odd road miles a Chicago origin adds before the ship. Packing, the road leg, the ocean leg, island trucking, storage and the car all go into it, and our binding estimate comes off a walkthrough in person or by video.

How long does the ocean part take?

Matson lists 5 to 7 days from the West Coast to Hawaii. The road leg from Illinois and the island delivery come on top, and your delivery window goes in writing.

Can you move me to Maui, Kauai or the Big Island?

Yes. Our profile covers every state, Hawaii included, and Matson calls at Kahului, Nawiliwili, Hilo and Kawaihae as well as Honolulu. It says transit varies with connecting barge schedules, so the neighbor island date goes in writing after the walkthrough.

Can I bring my houseplants to Hawaii?

Most plants enter after inspection if they're free of pests, disease and soil. Palms, orchids, bromeliads, pine, coffee and the grass family need permits or treatment first. HDOA Plant Quarantine answers at (808) 832-0566.

Will my dog have to go into quarantine?

Not if it meets every 5 Day Or Less requirement. Then it can be released at the Honolulu airport after inspection. The checklist includes two rabies shots, a passed FAVN blood test followed by a 30-day wait, and papers in at least 10 days ahead. Miss a step and the hold can run up to 120 days.

Can my car ride in the container with my furniture?

Not to Hawaii on Matson. It allows cars inside household containers only between Alaska ports and Tacoma. Your car ships on its own, arranged on the same LD file.

What if my things don't fill a container?

Matson ships full container loads only and sends smaller shipments to freight forwarders or moving and storage companies. The walkthrough tells you which side of that line you're on.

How do I tell a mover from a broker?

Ask, then check. Under 49 CFR 371 a broker can't present itself as a carrier, and it has to give you a list of the carriers it uses with their USDOT and MC numbers. LD holds an active USDOT number and never hands a file to a broker mid route.
