Planning a Move from the Chicago Area to Fairbanks?

Moving to Fairbanks from Chicago? LD Movers plans it as one job. We pick up in Chicagoland, price the move off a walkthrough, and keep the inland leg on the same file as the sailing.

Shipped by sea, Fairbanks is two trips stacked together. First the sea route to Anchorage, where TOTE and Matson both sail from Tacoma. Then about 358 more miles north: 35 to the Parks Highway, and 323 along it.

Freight takes that last stretch by road or on the Alaska Railroad, which runs trailers and containers on flat cars between Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Chicago to Fairbanks: Distance, Time, and Cost

Distance: About 3,466 road miles from Chicago on our route data, through Canada.

Drive time: Not part of our quote. The shipment sails to Anchorage and runs north from there, and the estimate is built on that sailing.

Delivery window: A committed spread of dates in writing, Fairbanks leg included, updated while the load's under way.

Cost drivers: Weight and distance, packing, crates, storage in transit, a vehicle on the file, and winter access at your door.

Starting in Chicago: Pickup, Packing and Building Rules

Still choosing between Fairbanks and Anchorage? Book the walkthrough by video. Your inventory is the same either way, and the binding estimate gets written once you've picked.

Pickup runs from 520 S Hicks Rd in Palatine, across Chicago and the suburbs from Des Plaines to Buffalo Grove. Freight elevator windows, loading docks and street parking get sorted before anything goes near a port. On a street too tight for the big truck, a compact truck shuttles to it.

A Fairbanks load gets handled at both ports and again for the run north. Our crews pack with dish packs, wardrobe boxes and mirror cartons, and crate whatever can't take a knock. Cartons our crew packs carry damage coverage that owner-packed boxes don't.

What LD Movers Includes on This Route

  • A walkthrough at home or over video, then a binding estimate priced on weight and distance
  • The Anchorage to Fairbanks leg planned on the same file
  • One coordinator, never a broker mid route
  • Storage in transit, billed monthly, every piece inventoried and labelled
  • Custom crates for artwork and marble
  • Vehicle transport alongside the household shipment
  • Released value protection at no charge, full value protection if you ask for it

Why the Fairbanks Leg Belongs in Your Estimate

Ask where a quote ends. If it ends at the Anchorage dock, you're 358 miles short, holding a container number and a problem.

We'd rather write the Fairbanks delivery into the window from day one. Then nobody argues about the last leg in January.

What to Know Before Moving to Fairbanks

The cold sets the calendar

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the average January low at the Fairbanks airport at minus 17.2 F. Normal lows stay below zero from November through March, and the airport logs about 114 nights a year under zero. O'Hare logs six or seven. A Chicago January is no rehearsal for this, so pick a summer delivery if your dates bend.

Your car needs a plug

Alaska's Department of Transportation tells drivers that an engine block heater on a timer saves fuel over idling, and to keep winter idling to 10 minutes. If your car rides north on our file, have the block heater sorted before the first cold snap.

Rent is level with Anchorage, and there's more of it

The state's March 2025 rent survey put a two-bedroom in the Fairbanks North Star Borough at $1,676 a month with utilities, up 8.7 percent on 2024. Vacancy was 13.5 percent, the highest of any area surveyed and above the borough's own 11.6 percent median since 2010. More empty units means more choice when you're signing a lease from Illinois.

The borough is growing, slowly

The borough went from 95,655 people at the April 2020 census to 97,083 in July 2025, per the state's Research and Analysis Section. That's 1,428 more. Births over deaths added 3,871, while 2,443 more people moved out than in. Fairbanks grows from within.

Fairbanks or Anchorage?

Rent won't decide it. The state's March 2025 survey had a two-bedroom at $1,676 in the Fairbanks borough and $1,680 in Anchorage. Four dollars.

Vacancy might. Fairbanks sat at 13.5 percent, Anchorage at 5.6. Winter will. NOAA's January normal low is minus 17.2 F at the Fairbanks airport against Anchorage's 11 F, with about 114 nights a year below zero against about 18.

Growth runs the other way. The Fairbanks borough added 1,428 people since 2020. Anchorage lost 2,026.

Then there's freight. Anchorage has the port inside the city. Fairbanks is one more leg by road or rail, and the move costs more for it. That's why we want the Fairbanks address on the estimate from the first walkthrough. Leaning Anchorage? Our Chicago to Anchorage page covers the PFD and the sailing.

Road or Rail for the Last 358 Miles

From the Anchorage dock, a Fairbanks shipment goes north one of two ways.

By road it's the Parks Highway: 35 miles out of Anchorage to the junction, then 323 miles to Fairbanks.

By rail, the Alaska Railroad carries trailers and containers on flat cars between Seward, Whittier, Anchorage and Fairbanks. Its freight fact sheet counts 318 flat cars in the fleet as of March 2026 and calls the Fairbanks rail yard a distribution hub. TOTE keeps a Fairbanks office on Airport Way.

Which way your load runs depends on the sailing and the date. Your coordinator confirms it before the delivery window goes in writing, and the estimate names your Fairbanks address, not the dock.

Is It Worth Moving to Fairbanks?

Worth it if the job or the posting is already waiting, and you've planned for a winter with about 114 nights below zero. It's a hard place to try out on spec.

The pros sit in the state's own numbers. Fairbanks had the highest rental vacancy of any area surveyed in 2025, rent level with Anchorage, and a borough still adding people.

The cons are the cold, the extra freight leg and the distance from family in the lower 48. Each costs you something. The freight leg is the one we can put a number on, and we do it at the walkthrough.

Chicago to Fairbanks Moving FAQ

Is Fairbanks growing?

Slowly. The Fairbanks North Star Borough had 97,083 people in July 2025, up 1,428 from the 2020 census, per Alaska's Research and Analysis Section. Births drove it. More people moved away than arrived.

Is Fairbanks or Anchorage cheaper to live in?

On rent they're even: $1,676 against $1,680 for a two-bedroom with utilities in the state's March 2025 survey. Fairbanks had far more vacancy, 13.5 percent to Anchorage's 5.6.

Do you get $1,000 for moving to Alaska?

Not for moving. The PFD goes to people who've been Alaska residents for a whole calendar year and plan to stay. The 2026 dividend is $1,200, per the Alaska Department of Revenue. The rules are on pfd.alaska.gov.

Can you drive a moving truck from Chicago to Fairbanks?

There is a road, about 3,466 miles from Chicago on our route data, and it crosses Canada, where CBSA recommends U.S. citizens carry a valid passport and every firearm gets declared. Our plan for household goods is the sea route to Anchorage, then road or rail north, which is how LD's own site describes Alaska moves.

How far is Fairbanks from Anchorage?

About 358 miles: 35 miles to the Parks Highway junction, then 323 miles of Parks Highway.

Can I move to Fairbanks in winter?

Yes, with a plan. NOAA's January normal low at the airport is minus 17.2 F. If your dates bend, summer is easier on everyone.

Can my car come too?

Yes. Vehicle transport rides on the same file as your furniture, tracked by the same coordinator.
