Planning a Move from the Chicago Area to Anchorage?
Moving to Anchorage Alaska from the Chicago area? LD Movers handles it from Palatine. We're an interstate mover with an active USDOT number, we move households to every state, Alaska included, and one coordinator follows your file from a Chicagoland walkthrough to your Anchorage door.
Shipped, the move runs by road to Tacoma and by sea from there. TOTE and Matson each sail Tacoma to Anchorage twice a week, and TOTE's household goods brochure lets moving vans roll straight aboard.
Anchorage is where Alaska's freight lands. The Port of Alaska, owned by the Municipality of Anchorage, says it moves goods consumed by 90 percent of Alaskans.
Route facts
Chicago to Anchorage: Distance, Time, and Cost
Distance: About 3,582 road miles from Chicago, through Canada. A shipped move ends the road leg at Tacoma and sails the rest.
Drive time: We don't quote one. A shipped move is built around a sailing, so the clock that matters is TOTE's 66 hours port to port plus the road legs at each end, set in writing at your estimate.
Delivery window: A committed spread of dates in writing, tracked and updated while your shipment's under way.
Cost drivers: Weight and distance first. Then packing, crates, storage in transit, a car on the file, and access at both doors.
Chicagoland pickup
The Chicago End: Pickup, Packing and Building Rules
Pickup runs from our office at 520 S Hicks Rd in Palatine and covers Chicago plus the northwest suburbs, Arlington Heights to Buffalo Grove. The walkthrough happens in your home or over video, and the binding estimate comes from that inventory.
A Loop high-rise brings its own rules. We book the freight elevator window and the loading dock, lay runners, and pad door jambs and elevator walls. Where the street's too tight for the big truck, a compact truck shuttles to it. If the building wants a certificate of insurance, your coordinator issues it.
Packing for Anchorage means packing for two ports. Our crews use dish packs, wardrobe boxes and mirror cartons, never supermarket boxes, and crate the artwork. Cartons our crew packs carry damage coverage that boxes you pack yourself don't.

Why LD Movers
Why One Coordinator Matters on the Anchorage Lane
Count the handoffs. A truck in Chicago. A terminal in Tacoma. A ship across the Gulf of Alaska. The port. Another truck to your street.
Each one is a spot where a brokered move loses track of whose problem a late container is. Our file never goes to a broker mid route. One coordinator holds it from the walkthrough in Illinois to the last box in Anchorage.
Cost breakdown
How Much Does It Cost to Move to Anchorage?
We don't print an Anchorage price. Your binding estimate is priced on weight and distance, built off a walkthrough, and this lane adds a sailing to the road miles.
| Area | Two-bedroom rent with utilities, March 2025 | Rental vacancy, March 2025 | Population, July 2025 | Average January low | How household freight arrives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anchorage | $1,680 | 5.6% | 289,221 | 11 F | By ship to the Port of Alaska, inside the city |
| Fairbanks North Star Borough | $1,676 | 13.5% | 97,083 | minus 17.2 F | By ship to Anchorage, then 358 miles by road or rail |
| Juneau | $1,661 | 4.0% | 31,182 | 23.8 F | By barge from Seattle; no road in |
The table is the state's data on living there. The move's cost comes from your walkthrough.
Lay the quotes side by side and check five things: the sailing each assumes, the port, delivery to your Anchorage address, the valuation, and storage if your keys come late. Missing one means your move isn't priced. Our guide to long-distance moving costs covers the rest.

On the ground in Alaska
What to Expect on Delivery Day in Anchorage
Your freight comes off the ship at the Port of Alaska on Anchorage Port Road and goes by truck to your door. Two carriers each sail twice a week, so the window gets built around a sailing and confirmed in writing.
Winter is part of the plan. NOAA's normals give Anchorage's airport about 18 nights a year below zero, against six or seven at O'Hare. Shovel a path to the door before the truck shows up, and flag a steep or unplowed driveway when you send us the access details.

How to Vet Long-Distance Movers for Anchorage
Ask these before you sign anything.
- Do you hold an active USDOT number? LD does.
- Does my file go to a broker? Ours doesn't.
- Does the quote run to my Anchorage address, or stop at a West Coast terminal?
- Which sailing does your estimate assume, and who do I call while it's at sea?
- Is the delivery window in writing?
What to Know Before Moving to Anchorage
Each number below comes from an Alaska agency or NOAA, with what it means for a household still packing in Illinois.
Rent runs about $1,680 for a two-bedroom
Alaska's labor department surveyed rents in March 2025 and put the median two-bedroom in Anchorage at $1,680 a month, utilities included, up 4.3 percent on 2024. Vacancy was 5.6 percent. The same report put a 2024 Anchorage mortgage payment at $2,540 a month, nearly $900 more than that rent. Sign the lease before you pick a sailing. If the keys come late, storage in transit holds the load, billed monthly.
January lows average 11 F
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the average January low at Anchorage's airport at 11 F. O'Hare's is 18.8 F. Anchorage also gets about 78 inches of snow in a normal season, double Chicago's 38. If you land before your freight does, the parkas belong in your suitcase.
Ship it now or buy it there
What sails with your household goods sits on one binding estimate. Sell the sofa in Schaumburg and buy one in Anchorage, and you've traded a line on that estimate for a freight bill you haven't seen. Decide room by room at the walkthrough.
Anchorage is slightly smaller than in 2020
Anchorage counted 289,221 people in July 2025, per the state's Research and Analysis Section, down 2,026 from the April 2020 census. Births outran deaths by 7,116 over that stretch, and 9,142 more people left than arrived. It's still home to about two in five Alaskans.
Do You Get Paid to Move to Anchorage? How the PFD Works
No. Not for about two years, anyway. Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend pays residents who've already lived there a full calendar year. Nobody gets a check for arriving.
Per the Alaska Department of Revenue's PFD Division, the 2026 dividend is $1,200, and $200 of that is an energy relief payment. To qualify for it, you had to live in Alaska for all of 2025, intend to stay indefinitely on the day you applied, and not have claimed residency anywhere else since December 31, 2024. Applications open January 1 and close March 31 every year.
Here's the math for a Chicago household that lands in Anchorage in June 2027. 2027 is a partial year, so it doesn't count. You live there all of 2028, file between January 1 and March 31, 2029, and the 2029 dividend is the first one you can qualify for.
Budget your first two Alaska years without it. The full rules, including the 72-hour presence rule and allowable absences, are on the PFD Division's eligibility page.
Drive the Alaska Highway or Ship It?
Driving means about 3,582 miles on our route data, through Canada. The Canada Border Services Agency recommends U.S. citizens carry a valid passport and accepts a U.S. enhanced driver's licence. A standard licence isn't on its list. Every firearm gets declared at the border.
Shipping means the household goes by road to Tacoma and sails from there. TOTE and Matson each run twice a week to Anchorage. TOTE carries cars in watertight vehicle holds.
Our plan for the furniture is the sailing, which is how LD's own site describes Alaska moves. The car can ride on the same file, or you drive it up. Driving the car yourself and shipping the house is a fair split. Tell us at the walkthrough and the estimate shows it.
Is Anchorage Worth Moving To?
Worth it if the job or the family is already there, and you can carry about $1,680 a month in rent with no dividend for two years. Moving north on a hunch is an expensive experiment.
The downsides are real. Family in the lower 48 is a flight or a 3,500-mile drive away. NOAA's normals keep Anchorage's average lows below freezing from October through April. Anything you forgot to ship comes up the way your freight did, by sea or air.
The upside is the address itself. About two in five Alaskans live in Anchorage, by the state's July 2025 estimates, and the Port of Alaska sits inside the city, which makes it the easiest Alaska address to move a household to.
Weighing Fairbanks instead? The state's 2025 rent survey put the two cities $4 apart on a two-bedroom. Our Chicago to Fairbanks page covers the extra 358 miles.
FAQ
Chicago to Anchorage Moving FAQ
Do you get $1,000 for moving to Alaska?
No. The Permanent Fund Dividend pays residents who've lived in Alaska a full calendar year, and the 2026 amount is $1,200, per the Alaska Department of Revenue. Land in mid-2027 and the first one you can qualify for is the 2029 dividend.
How much does it cost to move from Chicago to Anchorage?
It depends on weight, the sailing, packing and access at both doors, so we price it after a walkthrough in your home or by video. You get a binding estimate in writing. We don't guess by phone.
What salary do you need to live in Anchorage?
We won't guess at a salary. Here's the rent side: Alaska's March 2025 survey put an Anchorage two-bedroom at $1,680 a month with utilities, which is $20,160 a year. The state labor department's Relocate to Alaska page links its wage rates by occupation.
How do household goods get from Chicago to Anchorage?
By road to Tacoma, then by ship. TOTE and Matson both sail Tacoma to Anchorage twice a week. The drive through Canada is an option for you and your car.
How long is the water leg?
TOTE lists 66 hours port to port between Tacoma and Anchorage. Your full delivery window gets set at the estimate and confirmed in writing.
Can I ship my car to Anchorage with my furniture?
Yes. We arrange vehicle transport on the same file as your household goods, tracked by one coordinator.
When do I need an Alaska driver license?
Alaska DMV says new residents transfer an out-of-state license within 90 days.
