Hoffman Estates started south of I-90. Sam and Jack Hoffman bought a 160-acre farm east of Roselle Road between Golf and Higgins in 1954, and the first owners moved onto those half-acre lots in late 1955. The land north of the tollway, Winston Knolls and Westbury included, came in from 1961. Which side you're on still matters in move week, because it sets your garbage day.

What a Move in Hoffman Estates Actually Involves
Let your garbage day pick your move day. Groot collects on Monday north of the tollway and on Wednesday south of it, homes west of Bartlett Road included. Nothing goes out before 6 p.m. the night before, it has to be at the curb by 7 a.m., and Groot won't come back for a late set-out. Move out the night before pickup and your regular trash goes in the morning. Miss it and it sits a week.
Move-out trash has its own rule here. Anything over one cubic yard is a paid Groot pickup billed by the cubic yard, and the village names move-out garbage outright. Get Groot's estimate at 847-734-6400 before move week.
The homes run from those 1950s half-acre lots to the single-family homes and multi-family developments of the 1960s and 1970s. The Seasons at Hoffman Estates, 296 units in eight buildings with attached garages, was the first new multifamily development in the village since the late 1970s. Hoffman Estates covers about 19 square miles across four townships, mostly in Cook County with a sliver in Kane. Prairie Stone is the 750-acre business park west of Route 59 and north of I-90. The old Sears campus there, at 3333 Beverly Road, sold to Compass Datacenters, which plans data centers on it. Microsoft built a data center just north of I-90, east of Barrington Road. NOW Arena seats 11,000, and the Paul Douglas Forest Preserve is on the north side. Schaumburg and Palatine are on our local list too.

- Leaving a queen or king mattress? Fold or roll it and tie it with tape, string or bungee cords so one Groot worker can lift it.
- Old washer or fridge: Groot picks up appliances on Wednesdays at no extra charge, but only if you book it ahead at 847-734-6400.
